Carved Architectural Panel from Tamil Nadu
This ornamental wood carving features a rhythmic design of plant scrolls and confronted birds deeply carved into the material. This type of element was used in the interior architecture of wealthy South Indian homes, as well as in religious complexes or carved coffered ceilings.
The avian figures in the composition evoke the Annam / Annapakshi, mythical birds related to the Hamsa in Tamil decorative tradition. Associated with Saraswati in Hindu iconography, the Hamsa symbolizes wisdom, purity, and knowledge. Depending on regional interpretations, its representation ranges from a sacred swan to a stylized peacock or a hybrid creature from the Indian ornamental repertoire.
The depth of the carving and the irregularities of the wood enhance the surface’s lifelike quality. Tool marks, antique wear, and nuances in the patina contribute fully to the work’s character. The overall effect creates a dense play of shadows that accentuates its sculptural dimension when wall-mounted.
Like the other panels currently offered, this piece was part of a collection held for several decades in the Claude de Marteau reserves alongside Asian sculptures and architectural fragments.
