4-seater sofa model 64/4 – Georg Thams, Denmark, 1964

Model 64/4 constitutes a fine example of Danish furniture from the 1960s, where comfort, elegance, and restraint meet—a balance sought by Georg Thams. The body, entirely upholstered in dark green leather, forms a continuous volume whose armrests flare slightly outward. This relatively generous mass is nonetheless visually detached from the floor by slender tapered rosewood legs, whose grain associates perfectly with the deep green of the leather.

An interesting particularity: this example rests on only four legs rather than the six found on many 64/4 sofas. This construction further accentuates the lightness of the design: despite its great length and four genuine seats, the sofa appears almost suspended above the floor and maintains a particularly clean horizontal line.

The four seat cushions and four back cushions punctuate the length of the sofa while directly contributing to its comfort. Filled with feathers, they offer supple, enveloping seating; the proportions of the piece and the quality of its materials together contribute to the elegance of the model.

The original green leather has been carefully cleaned then conditioned with balm in our restoration workshop. This treatment has restored its suppleness while reviving the depth of its patina, without seeking to erase the nuances acquired over time. The surface thus retains the character of aged leather while regaining a more supple touch and a particularly rich and singular visual presence.

This vintage sofa finds its place easily in a large living room, alongside Scandinavian furniture as well as contemporary pieces: its patinated green leather, generous comfort, and architectural proportions make it a true centerpiece.

Georg Thams and Vejen Polstermøbelfabrik

The history of Vejen Polstermøbelfabrik is part of a family tradition of Danish furniture. The current company Thams traces its origins to 1923, when Georg Otto Thams founded his business in Vejen. The house specialized in the artisanal manufacture of quality upholstered furniture, offered in both leather and textile, and developed in parallel Scandinavian-style models, original creations, and furniture designed by architects.

The company’s presence in Vejen is also attested in a Danish telephone directory from 1954, which locates Vejen Polstermøbelfabrik at 23 Søndergade and mentions Georg Thams. These elements place the manufacturer within the fabric of Danish makers active during the golden age of postwar Scandinavian design.
