Sculptures and artworks from Burma Myanmar

Sculptures from Burma — present-day Myanmar — reflect a rich artistic tradition deeply shaped by Theravāda Buddhism and the cult of the nats, protective deities of the Burmese pantheon. Made of carved wood, often gilded or lacquered and sometimes enriched with glass or stone inlays, they stand out for their expressiveness and the harmony of their proportions.

Buddhas, monks and spiritual figures were intended for temples, monasteries or domestic altars. The works presented here come from the collection of Claude de Marteau, selected for their artistic quality, their age and their provenance, and represent an essential part of Myanmar’s spiritual heritage.
