Joseph-André Motte is counted among the leading figures of post-war French design. His work accompanied the renewal of furniture during the 1950s, balancing formal research, new materials, and mass production.

After a period with Marcel Gascoin, he founded the Atelier de Recherches Plastiques in 1954 with Pierre Guariche and Michel Mortier. He subsequently developed a varied range of furniture, notably including sideboards and enfilades, armchairs, and chairs, produced by several important houses of the era.
