Joseph-André Motte is one of the leading figures of post-war French design. His work contributed to the renewal of furniture design during the 1950s, a period marked by formal experimentation, new materials and mass production.

After working with Marcel Gascoin, he founded the Atelier de Recherches Plastiques in 1954 with Pierre Guariche and Michel Mortier. He subsequently developed a wide range of furniture, including sideboards and buffets, armchairs and chairs, produced by several major furniture manufacturers of the period.
