Upagupta monk

450,00

  • Buddhist image in copper alloy, possibly of the monk Upagupta, who, according to the Sanskrit text Ashokavadana, was the spirtual master of Emperor Ashoka (who is credited with playing an important role in the spread of Buddhism in ancient Asia).
  • Tibet, circa 1900 or earlier.
  • The sculpture’s plate has been loosened in the past, and the edge of the base has several tie-down perforations. (See photo)
  • The base shows traces of oxidation and small holes on its top, but fortunately the most visible wear marks are on the subject’s elbow, so they are not visible when facing him.
  • H 18 cm x W 14 cm x D 11 cm
  • Weight 1060 grams
  • Provenance: Estate of art dealer Claude de Marteau. www.thecdmcollection.be
  • Sold with certificate of origin.
