Timor 69 Lamp by Christian Kalff for Philips

The Timor 69 desk lamp, produced by Philips, follows the functional models developed from the 1950s onwards. Manufactured in several colors, including this brown version, it stands out for its clean lines, removable shade, and design conceived for everyday use, combining lighting efficiency with simplicity of design.

This model belongs to a progressive evolution of the Philips range. In the late 1960s, the lamp was first marketed under the name Major. It then became Timor 69 from the late 1970s onwards, before being produced until the 1980s. A third model, the Consul, adopted this base with larger proportions, reaching 57 cm in height and designed for a more powerful bulb.

Indeed, bulbs from this era were larger than today’s. They protruded more from the reflector and their wattage regularly reached 100 W. Heating while lighting…

The Timor 69 adopts the principles of the Senior model from the 1950s, while introducing a notable technical improvement: it is grounded, unlike the Major version. This evolution reflects an adaptation to electrical standards and contemporary usage, while maintaining a coherent aesthetic.

Christian Kalff and Philips’ Modern Identity

Louis Christian Kalff (1897–1976) is one of the major figures of Dutch industrial design. Joining Philips in 1925, he played a decisive role in defining the company’s brand image at a time when it was experiencing rapid expansion.

Within the advertising department in Eindhoven, Kalff imposed a modern and coherent vision, unifying typography, colors, and layout of communication materials. He favored the use of primary colors and developed an immediately recognizable visual language. In the 1920s, he introduced the motif of waves and stars, symbolizing radio transmission, progressively integrated into the products themselves.

In 1938, he designed the famous Philips shield, associating the brand name with this graphic emblem. This strong visual identity helped establish Philips in an industrial modernity where design, communication, and technical innovation were closely linked.

The Timor 69 is part of this heritage: an object designed with rigor, where function guides form, and where each element responds to a logic of controlled usage and production.
