Heart Chair FH 4103 – Hans Wegner, 1950s Danish design
Designed in the early 1950s by Hans J. Wegner for the publisher Fritz Hansen, the so-called “Heart” chair, model FH 4103, is part of a search for furniture that is rational, functional, and formally accomplished. The Danish designer, who created more than 500 chair models over his career, develops here a particularly rigorous approach, where every element contributes to an overall balance.
Its name comes from the distinctive shape of its seat, triangular and softened, evoking a heart. This geometry directly determines the chair’s tripod structure, resting on three legs, in a logic of coherence between form and function. The whole thus presents a stable, light silhouette that is immediately recognizable.
Designed to be stackable, the FH 4103 chair meets the practical constraints of post-war Danish design while retaining great formal simplicity. Less widely distributed than some of Wegner’s iconic models, such as the Round Chair JH501, it stands out for its more experimental character and its particularly masterful construction.
