The LC3 “Grand Confort” sofa in cognac leather, produced by Cassina, is part of one of the founding explorations of 20th-century modernist design, conducted from 1928 by Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret.
The LC3 sofa: a revolution in modern comfort
Designed in the late 1920s, the LC3 sofa belongs to the famous “Grand Confort” collection, developed to offer a radical alternative to the traditional club chair. The idea is simple yet decisive: separate the load-bearing structure from the seat. Where classic furniture conceals its construction, the LC3 reveals a tubular steel frame that independently supports generous cushions.
This approach breaks with the decorative codes inherited from the 19th century and follows a rationalist logic: the piece becomes a “machine for sitting”, designed to serve a precise function rather than imitate old styles.
Presented as early as 1928, the LC3 sofa differs from the LC2 with wider, lower proportions, offering a roomier, more enveloping seat.
From 1964, the Italian publisher Cassina obtained exclusive production rights and ensured the distribution of these models in accordance with the original drawings.
The model presented here, an LC3 sofa in cognac leather acquired around 1974 by its first owner, belongs to this period of official production in which Cassina set the manufacturing standards that are now the benchmark.
Its deeply patinated cognac leather bears witness to prolonged use without any loss of structural quality: the grain remains supple, dense and naturally satin. This surface evolution gives this LC3 sofa a distinctive presence.
Today, the LC3 sofa remains a major piece in the history of design, sought after for its rare balance of formal rigor and comfort.
