Large period modernist bar counter from the 1950s in blond oak.

A modernist counter from a true time capsule

This blonde oak bar counter is a unique and spectacular piece, custom-made in the early 1950s for its first owner. Its curved façade with vertical slats is subtly tilted forward, combined with indirect lighting integrated into the base. This creation perfectly illustrates the research conducted during the Trente Glorieuses around the integration of furniture into interior architecture.

This counter is a custom-made piece for an apartment designed in the 1950s, which it never left.

Designed to become a true structural element of the room, it evokes modernist interiors influenced by the creations of Charlotte Perriand and by a conception of furniture where functionality, sobriety and quality of execution take precedence over ornamentation.

The original interior lighting has been completely overhauled and upgraded to LED to preserve the luminous effect while ensuring contemporary use. The old glass tiles have been replaced with translucent Plexiglas panels, while all surfaces have been carefully cleaned, sanded and varnished in our restoration workshop.

Exceptional provenance

This counter comes from an apartment that remained virtually intact since the 1950s or 1960s. At the time of acquisition, all the furniture was still in place: armchairs and sofa in caning by Hartmut Lohmeyer, sideboard and credenza, curtains, textiles and furnishing elements formed a remarkably coherent ensemble, rarely preserved in such condition.

This provenance constitutes precious testimony to post-war modernist housing. More than a simple isolated piece of furniture, this counter was part of a complete interior design project whose original atmosphere had been preserved for several decades.

The photographs of this interior, taken before dismantling, document this now exceptional context.

A piece that has become rare

Large domestic bar counters of this quality are particularly rare today. Often custom-made for a specific dwelling, they have rarely survived the decades without transformation or destruction. Through its dimensions, quality of execution and state of preservation, this example constitutes remarkable testimony to French modernist furniture from the 1950s.
