Chettinad Indian carved panel – 19th century
This architectural carved wooden panel from Chettinad, Tamil Nadu, showcases a decorative composition combining stylized birds, open flowers, and deeply carved vegetal motifs. Its elongated format and ornamental vocabulary suggest it may have been part of a lintel, a door panel, or an integrated element within the interior architecture of a wealthy South Indian residence.
The birds depicted appear to belong to the Annam / Annapakshi repertoire, a regional variant of the Hamsa present in traditional Tamil ornamentation. In Hindu iconography, the Hamsa is associated with Saraswati and symbolizes knowledge, wisdom, and purity. Depending on regional interpretations, it may borrow characteristics from swans, peacocks, or certain stylized fantastic creatures.
The deeply carved relief accentuates plays of shadow and enhances the architectural presence of the piece. Floral volumes contrast with the darker recesses of the background, while the surface retains slight irregularities, tool marks, and natural variations consistent with ancient hand-executed sculpture.
Like the other panels currently offered, this element was part of a group kept for several decades in the storerooms of Claude de Marteau, alongside Asian sculptures and architectural fragments.
