Standing Buddha, Mandalay, 150 cm

  • This large carved image of the standing Buddha on its lotiform base was probably executed in Mandalay in the late 19th or early 20th century.
  • The posture is natural, his serene face sketches a slight smile. The compassionate look is realistic: The eyes are made from mother of pearl or enamel.
  • The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with inclusions of glassware, the Enlightened One holds in his left hand his monastic robe(uttarasanga). He holds in his right hand the fruit of the myrobolan tree, alluding to the healing power of Buddha.
