Indian carved Chettinad panel
This architectural carved wooden panel from Chettinad, Tamil Nadu, features a decorative composition centered on stylized birds surrounded by floral motifs and scrolls deeply incised into the material. Due to its elongated format, it may have belonged to a lintel, a door panel, or an element integrated into the interior architecture of a South Indian residence. This work dates from the early 20th century.
The birds depicted appear to belong to the Annam / Annapakshi repertoire, a regional variant of the Hamsa found in traditional Tamil ornamentation. In Hindu iconography, the Hamsa is associated with Saraswati and symbolizes wisdom, knowledge, and purity. Depending on regional interpretations, it may borrow characteristics from the swan, the peacock, or certain stylized mythical creatures.
The depth of the reliefs accentuates the play of shadows and gives the piece a strong architectural presence. Irregularities in the wood, tool marks, and natural surface variations bear witness to antique hand-executed craftsmanship. The overall design develops a rhythmic quality where animal forms and botanical elements gradually merge into a continuous decor.
Like the other panels currently offered, this element was part of a group kept for several decades in the storerooms of Claude de Marteau, alongside Asian sculptures and architectural fragments.
