Bronze Prajnaparamita, Java

1800,00

  • Votive statuette, possibly of Prajnaparamita, Buddhist goddess of transcendent wisdom. Although she is often depicted with feminine attributes (breast), androgynous representations are not unusual in Buddhist Javanese art of this period.
  • The four-armed deity is seated in lalitasana on a double lotus pedestal. The left hand and right arm are missing, but the halo can still be seen on the back.
  • Comparison with a copy from the MET Museum
  • Bronze (copper alloy), Java, 9th century.
  • H 11.5 cm x W 6.2 cm x D 5.2 cm
  • Weight: 264 grams
  • Provenance: Claude de Marteau Collection
  • Sold with certificate of origin.
