Cosack Leuchten
Cosack Leuchten: From Modernism to Space Age Luminaires
The Gebrüder Cosack (Cosack Brothers) company is part of a long regional tradition of manufacturing metal objects and lighting fixtures. Over the decades, it developed a particularly diverse production, distributed well beyond Germany’s borders.
In the 1950s, Cosack contributed to the development of German modernist design with streamlined desk lamps featuring adjustable reflectors and articulated structures. Lacquered metal, aluminum, and brass were used in designs where functionality went hand in hand with a pursuit of simplicity and precision.
Several designers are associated with this production, including Karl-Heinz Kinsky, Hans Wilfried Hegger, Gottfried Stürzenhofecker and Dorothee Becker. Their designs reflect the diversity of the manufacturer’s stylistic and technical approaches.
During the 1960s, Cosack evolved its collections toward more geometric forms and more decorative lighting compositions. Brass, glass, and metal reflectors lent themselves to new combinations, foreshadowing designs with sometimes bolder shapes.
During the 1970s, the manufacturer explored more expressive compositions, from Space Age to Hollywood Regency influences. Sputnik pendants, geometric brass structures, globes, and molded glass elements multiplied material contrasts and plays of light. Production then continued toward forms associated with 1980s postmodernism.
Cosack light fixtures were notably distributed in Belgium by S.A. Boulanger and in the United States by Koch & Lowy. These sales channels explain certain attribution confusions between manufacturers, publishers, and designers.
Our selection includes thick glass and brass wall lights, multi-light vintage ceiling lights, desk lamps, and decorative pendants.
We prioritize pieces whose build quality, condition, and lighting effects justify their selection.
Each light fixture is selected for its build quality, condition, and aesthetic appeal. Its wiring is checked and, when necessary, serviced in our restoration workshop.
