Traditional Isan frog box

Antique traditional box depicting a frog or toad in lacquered wood, from the Isan region of Thailand. Early 20th century.
This auspicious animal is associated with Buddhism, and these vessels are entrusted with prayers for rain, fertility, good harvests…
The Isan region also produced loom shuttles in a similar style, as it has a strong tradition of textile production.
Entirely hand-crafted, the box is both sober and sophisticated in design, like many products of the period, and is both a functional and spiritual object.
Provenance: Estate of Asian art dealer and collector Claude de Marteau.

The box is in very good condition, the crack at the back is sealed in its lacquer and cannot be opened.
