“Astrid” teak sideboard by Oswald Vermaercke – 3 doors

Produced by the Belgian publisher V-Form under the direction of Oswald Vermaercke, this “Astrid” teak sideboard illustrates the evolution of Belgian furniture towards more architectural, sophisticated lines during the 1960s. The “Astrid” series, rarer than the earlier “Paola” productions, develops a more structured approach while retaining the Scandinavian influence characteristic of Vermaercke’s creations.

The model stands out for its very elongated proportions, its three hinged doors, and the particularly meticulous quality of its joinery. The teak grain, bold and contrasting, strongly contributes to the piece’s visual presence while maintaining a certain modernist restraint.

The discreetly integrated handles on the front, along with the slender, slightly tapered base, enhance the overall impression of architectural lightness. This search for balance between taut lines, restrained volumes, and refined details is among the most recognizable signatures of V-Form productions from this period.

Oswald Vermaercke was then actively involved in introducing Scandinavian influences into post-war Belgian furniture. Under his impetus, V-Form developed a lighter, more functional modernist language that would leave a lasting mark on Belgian design in the 1960s.

The surfaces have been carefully restored while preserving the natural nuances of the teak and the depth of its grain developed over time.
