Burmese Standing Buddha in Gilded Wood – Mandalay

  • Standing Buddha, carved in solid wood on a lotiform base, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay period, late 19th / early 20th century.
  • His posture is natural and his serene face reveals a slight smile.
    The eyes are made of glass for the sake of realism.
  • The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with glass inclusions, and the Enlightened One holds his monastic robe(uttarasanga) in his left hand. In his right hand, he holds the fruit of the myrobolan tree, an allusion to Buddha’s healing powers.

  • This Burmese piece acquired in 1972 in Thailand still bears the sealed label indicating “The Department of Fine Arts has granted permission to export from the Kingdom under license number 511 2515” (Buddhist calendar 2515 = year 1972)
  • We have a very limited supply of these parts. They come from the former stock of his shop once located on rue de la Régence and in the Sablon district of Brussels, then remained untouched for nearly 50 years in his attics.
  • Sold with certificate of origin.
  • Rare signs of normal wear, very good condition.
