Brass and glass “Dandelion” Sputnik flush mount, 1970s

This brass and glass “Dandelion” Sputnik flush mount is representative of the 1960s–1970s Space Age, characterized by radiating structures evoking a dandelion flower, also nicknamed “snowflakes.” This starburst-style assembly became iconic of modernist design and directly echoes the creations of Emil Stejnar or Rupert Nikoll, whose lighting fixtures develop a similar logic of multiplying light points and scattered light distribution.

This piece was produced in East Germany by the VEB Leuchtenbau company (Volkseigener Betrieb, a state-owned enterprise). A large majority of their production was intended for export. The catalog at the time included over a hundred models, reflecting a structured production that remained attentive to contemporary design trends. In this context, Sputnik or “Dandelion” type fixtures demonstrate a shared compositional principle on a European scale.
