Large ‘Paola’ teak sideboard by Oswald Vermaercke and V-Form
Developed from 1959 by Belgian designer Oswald Vermaercke for publisher V-Form, the ‘Paola’ series is among the most representative creations of Belgian modernism influenced by post-war Scandinavian design. The model’s name directly references the future Queen Paola of Belgium, whose marriage to Prince Albert took place the same year.
This large sideboard is distinguished by its particularly horizontal proportions, its sliding doors, and the quality of its joinery. The highly pronounced and contrasting teak grain strongly contributes to the furniture’s visual presence while enhancing the natural warmth of its surfaces.
The base features a very distinctive tapered, almost sculptural form, characteristic of this V-Form model. Its angular and very slender design reinforces the impression of architectural lightness developed by the ensemble, despite the furniture’s significant dimensions.
The drawers feature slightly curved interiors, a design detail intended to prevent small objects from getting stuck in right angles. This attention to daily use demonstrates the care taken in the design of the ‘Paola’ series.
The surfaces have been carefully restored while preserving the natural depth of the teak and the nuances developed by the wood over time.
