Suzanne Bonnichon and the ‘Soldier’ Floor Lamp in French Post-War Production
Attributed to Suzanne Bonnichon and created for Jacques Adnet, the ‘Soldier’ floor lamp is part of French production from the 1950s–1960s. This model regularly appears in public sales, where it is described as a lacquered wood floor lamp, often ‘keel’-shaped, depicting a stylized figure.
The turned and hand-painted wooden structure is one of the essential elements of these creations. The polychrome treatment and simplification of volumes create a silhouette evoking a soldier, both decorative and immediately identifiable, reflecting a freer approach to lighting in the context of post-war French design.
These pieces demonstrate a production where artisanal craftsmanship remains central, particularly in woodworking and painting. Their distribution, often linked to Jacques Adnet’s circle, reflects a period when certain creations moved away from strict functionalism to introduce a more figurative dimension into domestic objects.
Today, this type of floor lamp remains relatively uncommon and retains particular interest for its unique character within mid-20th century French design.
