Art Deco brass mirror – Maison Moderna
This oval Art Deco brass mirror, signed on the reverse by Maison Moderna, features a structured design and meticulous craftsmanship.
The frame features brass or bronze molded palmettes and scrolls, arranged alternately within a copper oval.
Each element is marked on the reverse “Moderna”, the signature of a house that is still little documented, of which some known mirrors, also stamped, date from the 1930s.
The mirror is not original, but is antique. We have chosen to keep it for its silvering, which is consistent with the piece.
Décor inherited from Art Deco ironwork
The stylized palmette motif, here repeated in a rhythmic pattern, belongs to the decorative vocabulary widely disseminated in the decorative arts of the 1920s–1930s.
It is found in particular in major artistic ironwork compositions, where it is used to structure grilles, doors, and balustrades, as in Edgar Brandt’s works.
Without reaching the complexity of these monumental works, this mirror reflects the spread of these motifs into more accessible decorative objects, conveying the direct influence of artistic ironwork on domestic production of the period.
