Pulegoso Bubble Glass Ceiling Light, 1970s

This bubble glass ceiling light features a texture rich in air inclusions — known as pulegoso — which fragments the light and produces a dense and slightly opalescent effect, typical of European lighting from the 1970s.

The term pulegoso, derived from the Italian pulega (“bubble”), refers to glass obtained by introducing gas into the molten mass. This particular structure of bubble glass renders the material partially opaque and promotes a soft, homogeneous diffusion of light. The technique was developed in Murano in the 1920s, notably by Napoleone Martinuzzi for Venini.

The thickness of the bubble glass and the regularity of the inclusions reflect a mastered manufacturing process, found in certain Italian and German productions of the period. Many Central European publishers commissioned Italian glass workshops.

Due to its construction and treatment of bubble glass, this model can be compared to certain productions by Doria Leuchten, active in Germany in the 1960s–1970s, although a formal attribution cannot be made.

Another lamp from the 1970s, made using the same blown glass technique, can be discovered here.
