European research into bubbled glass during the 1960s and 1970s was part of an exploration into light diffusion.
Bubbled glass mushroom lamp: material as a light source.
This type of glass is obtained by intentionally introducing carbon dioxide micro-bubbles into the molten mass. This technique modifies light diffusion by fragmenting the light and softening contrasts. The resulting light is homogeneous and glare-free, creating a soft, enveloping atmosphere.
This type of glass treatment evokes the effects of pulegoso glass developed in Murano workshops, though that term should be reserved for identified Italian productions. Here, it represents a broader bubbled glass technique characteristic of European production from this period—specifically, from the Baum Leuchten manufacture.
The glass surface, brought to life by these air inclusions, reacts differently depending on light intensity and the environment. It captures and diffuses light irregularly, giving the fixture a visual presence that is both discreet and vibrant.
Highly representative of 1970s design, the Baum Leuchten bubbled glass mushroom lamp remains sought after today for its light quality and simple form.
