Julien Key & Chat Noir “Chafetière”, 1966.
- Julien Keymolen ( Zaventem 1933-1999) known as Julien Key, Belgian poster artist, he designed numerous advertising posters for brands such as Simca, Solex, Assubel… “He is one of Belgium’s finest graphic designers” (Pierre Sterckx, “Connaissance des Arts” n°3, January 1974).
- In 1966, he designed this textless poster for the ” Chat Noir ” coffee brand. The poster depicts a black cat with a tail in the shape of a coffee-pot spout (sometimes nicknamed “Chafetière”).
- The absence of text was a novelty, and Key was one of the first advertising designers to experiment with an image that, in itself, was sufficient to convey the advertising message. That’s why he was later hailed as a master of the “art of omission“.
