Sawankhalok jar in stoneware from the Sukhothai period, with four lug handles, with a brownish glaze on a light ground. Thailand, Sawankhalok / Si Satchanalai kilns, 15th–16th century (late Sukhothai period).
Sawankhalok ceramics played a central role in Southeast Asia’s maritime trade from the 14th century onward, notably with Indonesia. Many examples come from shipwrecks discovered off the Malaysian and Indonesian coasts, which explains the presence of concretions.
