Large modernist sideboard by Oswald Vermaercke
Designed by the Belgian designer and architect Oswald Vermaercke during the 1960s/1970s, this large sideboard illustrates the particularly architectural approach developed by part of post-war Belgian modernism. The model favours extremely horizontal lines combined with a visually light structure despite its imposing proportions.
The contrast between the dark volume of the main body and the slender black base enhances the impression of suspension that characterises the piece. This search for balance between visual density and structural lightness is among the most remarkable aspects of the creations attributed to Oswald Vermaercke.
The front features a particularly pared-back design in which the integrated handles fully contribute to the overall geometric continuity. This formal restraint brings some of Vermaercke’s production closer to the Belgian modernist research of the same period, focused on more architectural and rational furniture.
With its exceptional proportions and taut horizontal development, this sideboard retains a particularly strong sculptural presence while maintaining great visual restraint.
