The AJ Royal 500 pendant light, designed by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen, is part of the lighting programme for Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel in the late 1950s. It reflects a holistic approach to design in which architecture, furniture and light are conceived as a coherent whole.
AJ Royal 500, a pendant light by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen
The metal structure stands out for its circular form and perforated shade. The light source is directed downward through a central opening, providing functional direct lighting, while the perforations in the upper section allow light to escape upward.
This system produces combined lighting, both direct and indirect. The light diffused upward creates an ambient halo, softening contrasts, while the downward-directed light remains precise and usable. The overall design limits glare while ensuring an even distribution of light.
With the AJ Royal 500 pendant light, Arne Jacobsen developed a luminaire whose clarity rests on a simple, controlled construction. The balance between use and design is rooted in post-war Danish design, where each element serves a clearly defined function.
Today, this original light fixture remains a sought-after piece, both for its significance in Arne Jacobsen’s oeuvre and for the quality of light it produces.
