Charlemagne stack, 17th century bucket stack

  • Charlemagne’s 16-mark bronze bucket stack (Etalon royal de poids), with two busted figures forming the handle uprights, the hasp and its support depicting sea horses, the movable catch depicting dolphins facing each other and its attachments depicting bifid mermaids. No buckets.
  • The stack features three hallmarks (the crossed arrow and key) with the initials of the master balance “G S”.

  • Lyon or Nuremberg, late 17th / early 18th century.
  • Provenance: Estate of collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau.
