Søholm Keramik and 20th-century Danish ceramics
The Danish manufactory Søholm Keramik, established on the island of Bornholm, was founded in 1835 by Edvard Christian Sonne and Herman Sonne Wolffsen. Based in the town of Rønne, it developed a major ceramic production for nearly 160 years before closing permanently in 1996. Søholm gradually stood out for the quality of its faience and for a production combining utilitarian objects with decorative creations. The manufactory notably produced vases, lamps, tableware sets, and modernist pieces with clean lines, often enhanced by deep, nuanced glazes that became characteristic of post-war Scandinavian design. From the 1950s to the 1970s, Søholm experienced a particularly important creative period, driven by several designers and ceramicists, including Einar Johansen and Svend Åge Jensen. Their creations greatly helped secure the manufactory’s place in the history of 20th-century Danish ceramics. Today, Søholm ceramics remain highly sought-after on the vintage design and decorative Scandinavian arts market. Their balance of traditional craftsmanship, Nordic modernism, and quality of execution continues to appeal to collectors and lovers of Danish ceramics.
