Bronze Maravijaya Buddha, Burma.

18th-century Burmese bronze depicting Shakyamuni Buddha in the position of witnessing the earth.
Inscriptions by the donor are still clearly visible on the back of the throne (see photo).
The upper part shows red pigmentations: probably ferrous ochre (iron hydroxide) indicating that this image was probably discovered partially buried, upside down, in very damp earth, while the lower part, greenish-grey, is mixed with ferrous oxidations (copper alloy containing some iron).
Provenance: Estate of the collector Claude de Marteau.
