1950s designer lighting and vintage furniture
1950s selection dedicated to designer lighting and vintage furniture: sideboards, credenzas, vintage desks, secrétaire desks, armchairs, chairs and coffee tables with compass legs in oak, beech or teak, characteristic of early modernist design and the post-war Reconstruction.
In France, the decade was shaped by Reconstruction architects and modernist decorators such as Le Corbusier, Jacques Adnet, Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and René Gabriel. Their influence can be seen in a new generation of designers such as Marcel Gascoin, Pierre Guariche and the Atelier de Recherche Plastique, Joseph-André Motte and Pierre Paulin, who helped renew the forms and uses of 1950s furniture.
In Denmark, Finn Juhl paved the way for organic design, while Arne Jacobsen championed a more functionalist approach to modern furniture. Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen—student of Kaare Klint—and Arne Vodder contributed to the rise of the Danish Modern movement and the international spread of Scandinavian furniture. In the Netherlands, Louis Van Teeffelen developed high-end furniture in teak, rosewood, walnut or wenge from the mid-1950s.
In Italy, Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi, Franco Albini and Piero Fornasetti helped spread the influence of Italian design, while Achille Castiglioni and Gino Sarfatti renewed the world of modern lighting, distributed through publishers such as Stilnovo, Arteluce and Oluce…
The selection also includes vintage lighting in lacquered sheet metal or aluminium with free-form shapes: designer lamps, wall lights, vintage pendant lights and floor lamps characteristic of the 1950s.
