The “Vetri Murano” marks and the authenticity of Murano glass
During the 20th century, the spread of Murano glassmaking techniques led to wider production, but also the emergence of copies made outside the island. To preserve the authenticity of their craftsmanship, Murano glassmakers established collective marks to identify their production.
Introduced in 1981 by the Veneziavetro consortium, the “Vetri Murano” and “VM” brands constitute a certification system designed to guarantee the origin of the pieces. Such labels are also found on these “Matita” Vetri Murano lamps. They could only be used by glassworks located in Murano that adhered to strict manufacturing criteria.
Each manufacturer was assigned an identification number appearing on the label affixed to the objects. This marking ensures the traceability of the pieces and distinguishes authentic productions in a context of increasing international distribution.
The “Matita” lamps presented here bear this label, testifying to their Murano manufacture and their place in this glassmaking tradition; this type of label can be found on these wall sconces presented recently.
