In 1960, two new modular furniture systems by Dieter Rams came onto the market, which differed considerably from the RZ 57 system he had created in 1957. Whereas the earlier models were essentially box-shaped, for the RZ 60 program Rams used freer lines, which added lightness to the form. The designer’s use of more organic, curved silhouettes are truly the DNA of this collection.
These chair models are defined by two large legs with cast aluminum glides, which offer a high degree of stability, and the essentially rectangular construction of the seat and backrest features a pronounced rearward slope. The 601 was intended for livings or bedrooms, for a more relaxed seating experience. Today, with the evolving concept of professional living, it fits perfectly into a triangulation of comfort, ergonomics and aesthetics.
Rams’ design notes state: “A simple, unobtrusive chair that can be easily grouped together, even in small apartments”. All models in the Rams RZ 60 series are characterized by a visual lightness that doesn’t obstruct the room, but rather enhances perspective and legibility, since there is no interference in the visual field.
