Chofa Naga, Buddhist temple finial ornament

Carved wooden temple finial with Naga head, guardian of treasures, fertility, prosperity and immortality.
It’s another emanation of the god Vishnu.
Thailand, 18th/19th century.
Beautiful patina of faded wood, with vestiges of polychromy mixed with calcified lichens.
Supplied with white or black steel base, adjustable chofa inclination.
Sold with its certificate of provenance: Estate of the collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau.
It is still sealed with its export license from Thailand’s Department of Fine Arts, which authorized it to leave the country at the time (year 2519 in the Buddhist calendar, i.e. 1976).
