Bronze Mahā-Moggallāna in adoration, Burma
€1650,00
- Bronze Mahā-Moggallāna in adoration, Burma, Mandalay period, c. 1900.
- The Moggallanaworshipper (Maha), thearhat is one of Buddha‘s main disciples, with whom he is sometimes confused: although he has certain laksanas (three neck folds, elongated lobes, etc.), he has no ushnisha.
- The arhat is a figure of primary importance in Theravada Buddhism, but he attains enlightenment through a teaching, whereas a Buddha attains enlightenment on his own. Although Moggallana is widely evoked in Mahayana Buddhism, the ideal of the arhat is abandoned in favor of the more altruistic concept of the bodhisattva.
