Postmodernism
Postmodernism refers to a movement that emerged from the 1970s onward in reaction to the rigor and the claimed universality of modernism. In architecture, design and the decorative arts, it is characterized by a deliberate return to ornament, historical references, irony and eclecticism.
Expressive forms, quotations from the past, bold colors and playful proportions break with strict functionalism. Postmodernism embraces formal freedom and a plurality of languages, placing objects and spaces back into a cultural, symbolic and sometimes playful context. It represents a major stage in the artistic creation of the late 20th century.
